Town Centers are large mixed use centers that incorporate an open-air main street with shops, movie theaters, offices, hotels, and/or housing.

Town Centers may also include a grocery store or discount stores.

Main Streets typically incorporate New Urbanist design principals such as:

  • Low speeds
  • Narrow travel lanes
  • Curb parking
  • Wide sidewalks
  • Pedestrian crosswalks
  • Attractive landscaping
  • Uniform "build-to" lines
  • Parking behind buildings

In some cases, such as Santana Row in San Jose, California and Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio, retail shops and restaurants are the dominant land uses.

In other cases, such as Reston Town Center in Fairfax County, Virginia, office is the dominant land use.
