Sustainable Transportation Solutions
Sustainable transportation solutions meet current transportation needs without compromising the transportation needs of future generations.

Sustainable transportation solutions protect and enhance the natural environment by reducing vehicle-miles of travel, fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse gases and other emissions, and, thus, one’s carbon footprint.

Multi-modal transportation integrated with compact, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly development is sustainable since it consumes less land and reduces auto-dependence, peak hour vehicle-trips (and, hence, congestion), and vehicle miles of travel (VMT). Compact, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly development reduces driving by 20 to 40 percent or more.

Wells + Associates practices sustainability by providing the following services:
Travel Demand Management (TDM)
The demand for travel and parking can be influenced by TDM measures, which typically include incentives to use transit, ride-sharing, parking management, alternative work schedules, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, better management of existing resources, and telecommuting.

These are relatively inexpensive measures that can be implemented quickly.  Most TDM measures are endorsed by government agencies and the general public.  Careful planning is required to gain employee and user acceptance.  TDM programs must be tailored to the specific project and user groups.

Wells + Associates has prepared TDM programs for numerous federal agencies, major employers, mixed-use developments/town centers, and schools.

Wells + Associates offers the following TDM-related services:

Evaluation of existing transportation conditions
Traffic, vehicle occupancy, and parking occupancy counts
Employee surveys
Analysis of existing employee travel patterns
Identification and evaluation of alternative TDM measures
Transit/shuttle bus planning
Pedestrian planning studies
Bicycle planning studies
Parking Studies
Cost estimates
Presentation graphics
Negotiations with employers and public agency staff
Expert witness testimony

Wells + Associates has conducted:

185 studies in 60 of the 86 existing Metro station areas in metropolitan Washington
10 studies at all four planned stations along the Silver line extension through Tysons Corner
11 studies at three of the eight planned stations along the Silver line extension from Tysons Corner to Dulles Airport and beyond.
