U.S. Route 1/Jefferson Davis Highway,
Monroe Avenue Bridge |
| Alexandria, Virginia |
Pulte Homes and Centex recently re-aligned the U.S. Route 1/Jefferson Highway bridge at Monroe Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia. This bridge formerly spanned RF&F Railroad’s classification yards. The mainline of the railroad was re-located from the west to the east side of the property and the yard tracks were removed to make way fo r a 6.6 million square foot mixed use community known as Potomac Yards.
The former S-curve alignment spanned the railroad tracks at a right angle, across the shortest possible distance. This curvilinear alignment was inefficient and resulting in many accidents at the tight curves.
The straightened alignment is more efficient and safer. It also created more regularly-shaped development parcels and an orthogonal grid street network, which will serve a predominantly residential neighborhood within the Potomac Yards community.
Traffic was maintained in both directions at all times as the old bridge was demolished and the new bridge was built.
Wells + Associates prepared the Potomac Yards Traffic Impact Study (TIS) and Transportation Management Plan (TMP) that demonstrated that the straightened bridge would adequately accommodate long-range traffic forecasts.
Wells + Associates also prepared Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and permanent traffic signal plans for the new Route 1/Slater’s Lane, Route 1/Potomac Avenue, Potomac Avenue/Main Street, and Potomac Avenue/Monroe Avenue intersections.
