National Harbor Waterfront
Traffic Signal System
Prince Georges County, Maryland

National Harbor is a mixed-use, water resort and entertainment destination that will consist of 7,000,000 S.F. of office, retail, hotel, and restaurant space.  Located along the Potomac River, National Harbor will be a gateway to the National Capital Region with access from the Capital Beltway (I-95/I-495), I-295, and Oxon Hill Road (MD 414) in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Wells + Associates is providing traffic engineering design and consulting services for an extraordinary traffic signal system for the Water Front parcel.  The system includes five new traffic signals that will be interconnected by hardwire fiber optic communication cable and linked to a high speed communication hub that can be remotely accessed from the Prince George’s County Smart Trip Center.

Two Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) stations will be positioned 40 to 45 feet above grade in order to view traffic flows along National Harbor Boulevard and American Way.  These cameras will be equipped with pan, tilt, and zoom features.  The operation of the signal system can be remotely reprogrammed in response to real-time traffic conditions viewed from the Smart Trip Center.

Extraordinary care was taken to integrate this system into the American Way streetscape.  The traffic signal equipment at sidewalk level will seamlessly blend with the special paving and sidewalk treatments selected by the project architects.  The style, color, and orientation of the traffic signal poles were carefully selected to minimize overhead visual impacts while maintaining adequate function.
