Baltimore-Washington Parkway
Arundel Mills Boulevard Interchange - Anne Arundel County, Maryland
A new interchange on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway was the key that unlocked the development potential of hundreds of acres of land where Arundel Mills and significant outparcel development now sit.

Existing interchanges on the Parkway at MD 100 to the north and MD 175 to the south could not carry existing traffic plus new traffic that would be generated by this new development. The 4.65-mile spacing between these interchanges presented an opportunity to construct a third interchange while maintaining minimum one-mile spacing between interchanges.

Wells + Associates was retained by the property owner to evaluate the feasibility of a new interchange, prepare long-range traffic forecasts, identify alternative interchange design concepts, evaluate those concepts, and recommend the preferred alternative.

Wells + Associates demonstrated that the new full-movement, diamond interchange would have sufficient capacity to adequately accommodate long-range traffic forecasts.  Roundabouts were recommended at the two junctions where the Parkway ramps meet Arundel Boulevard because they can carry large volumes of traffic, at moderate speeds, without long queues.

The recommended design was reviewed and approved by Anne Arundel County and the Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA).  It is now built, open to traffic, and used by thousands of motorists every day.
