Laurel Park Race Course
Laurel, Maryland
Laurel Park, home of the Maryland Million Day, opened for racing October 2, 1911.  The racing season at Laurel is divided into three meets to complement the racing schedule of Pimlico Race Course, located approximately 30 miles from Laurel Park.  Laurel Park also offers year-round daily simulcasting.

Total daily seating capacity is 4,180 fans, who may choose to view races from Wilwyn Theatre (grandstand area) or the clubhouse.  Fans can dine at Laurel Park in the 450-seat Turf Club Dining Room and the 80-seat Clocker’s Corner Simulcast Theatre.

Laurel Park is owned by the Maryland Jockey Club (MJC), which is part of the Magna Entertainment Corporation.  MJC proposes to rebuild and expand the outmoded grandstands and stables and to relocate and rebuild the one-mile oval track.  Gambling would be allowed at up to 3,500 video lottery terminals (i.e., slot machines), if enabling legislation is passed by the State of Maryland.

Wells + Associates was retained by MJC to evaluate the transportation impacts of these changes.  Peak weekday and weekend traffic and parking demands were estimated based on extensive surveys at comparable horse race tracks with VLT’s (Charlestown Races and Slots in West Virginia and at Dover Downs and Delaware Park in Delaware).

Regional road improvements; local access improvements; parking; on-site parking and circulation requirements; and measures to protect adjacent residential neighborhoods from race track traffic were identified.
