German School of Washington
Transportation Managment Plan - Potomac, Maryland
The German School of Washington D.C. (GSW) operates a private educational institution at 8617 Chateau Drive, Potomac, Maryland on a 17-acre parcel of land owned by the Federal Republic of Germany.  GSW currently enrolls 586 students in grades Pre-K through 13 and employs 96 faculty and staff.

Wells + Associates was retained by the school to evaluate existing transportation operations and prepare a Transportation Management Plan (TMP) that would: (a) promote safe and efficient transportation operations on the school campus and adjacent public streets and (b) reduce the school’s transportation impacts on the campus and adjacent neighborhood.

Extensive surveys, traffic counts, and field observations indicated that the GSW generates fewer vehicle-trips than many other independent schools because 42 percent of all students take the bus to school.

The TMP addressed: vehicular access, egress, and circulation; parking; bus operations; school transportation coordinator; driver operations; high school drivers; roller skates, skate boards, and mountain bikes; parking policies; delivery and service vehicles; general safety provisions; community coordination; sports; special/ exceptional events; monitoring; and enforcement.

Recommendations included: designation of a School Transportation Coordinator; changes to on-campus vehicle circulation; designate parking spaces for faculty/staff, students, and parents; station traffic monitors on the campus; install raised crosswalks; promote greater bus use and carpooling; provide satellite parking and shuttle bus service for special events.
