| Sheridan School |
| Washington, D.C. |
The Sheridan School is a small independent school with approximately 205 students of diverse backgrounds enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade (i.e., lower school, middle school, and junior high school).
The school seeks a special exception to (1) add 1,200 square feet (S.F.) of gross floor area (GFA) to the existing school building, (2) modify the existing site plan to reconfigure the parking area in front of the school along 36thStreet, and (3) increase the maximum number of students permitted to be enrolled at the school from 215 to 226 students.
Wells + Associates is providing the traffic and parking studies to support the special application to the District of Columbia Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA).
Recommendations included: re-enforcing the current traffic management plan in quarterly letters or flyers; prevent parents and students from crossing at mid-block; increased enforcement of posted speed limits, stop sign, and other traffic regulations; maintain signs and pavement markings in good condition; prohibit service and delivery before 7:00 AM; remove the existing rumble strips in front of the school; encourage faculty/staff to share rides, take transit, or walk to work; encourage students to walk to school or carpool; remove nearby three-hour parking meters; and provide unrestricted parking on this block face. |
