| Washington, D.C. |
Founded in 1967 by Sally L. Smith, The Lab School of Washington is internationally recognized for its innovative programs for children and adults with learning disabilities. The Lab School offers individualized instruction to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The school employs190 faculty and staff and enrolls 330 students.
The Lab School generates a peak demand for 175 parking spaces. Only 87 spaces are located on campus. Consequently, many Lab School faculty, staff, students, and visitors park on adjacent public streets and nearby private parking lots.
Wells + Associates developed a Travel Management Plan (TMP) to balance parking demand and supply and better manage morning student drop-off traffic.
Parking supply was increased to 148 spaces by providing 20 stacked parking spaces on campus, constructing 26 net additional angled parking spaces on Whitehaven Parkway adjacent to the school, and leasing 15 off-campus parking spaces. Parking demand was reduced to 130 spaces by implementing shuttle bus service to nearby Metro stations and a faculty/staff carpool program. The TMP also includes periodic monitoring and reporting elements.
Wells + Associates worked closely with the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC), District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and Office of Planning (OP) staff. The Lab School’s TMP was approved by the District of Columbia Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA). |
