| City of Fairfax, Virginia |
Sidney Lanier Middle School, a public school located on the west side of the City of Fairfax, serves students in both the City and Fairfax County. School enrollment, currently 931 seventh and eighth graders, is expected to increase to 1,125 students.
To accommodate this growth, the existing school will be renovated and expanded. Proposed changes include:
| • |
Relocation of the primary pick-up/drop-off area |
| • |
Addition of a 225-space parking lot adjacent to the school recreation fields |
| • |
Separated school bus and passenger car traffic |
| • |
Relocation of the school driveway from a residential street to a minor arterial road |
Wells + Associates prepared a traffic impact study that addressed the levels of service at the school and adjacent intersections, redistribution of school traffic, trip generation rates, off-site roadway improvements, pedestrian activity, and vehicular queues. Recommended improvements included left and right turn lanes and police/signal control at the main school entrance during school peak hours.
Wells + Associates attended meetings with school staff, City of Fairfax Mayor and staff, and neighborhood residents in a consensus-building process to address transportation concerns. Expert witness testimony will be provided before the City Council. |
