| T.C. Williams High School Renovation |
| Alexandria, Virginia |
Alexandria City Public Schools is undertaking the largest public works project in the City of Alexandria’s history, with the reconstruction and expansion of T.C. Williams High School.
This school, located south of King Street, east of Quaker Lane, and north of Bishop Lane, serves all City of Alexandria high school students (grades 10-12). The existing school building, currently 255,000 gross square feet (GSF), will be replaced by a new 420,000 GSF school. Upon completion of the new school building the old one will be torn down and replaced by a parking garage. The new building will accommodate 2,500 students, an increase from 2,323 students and 300 staff.
Wells + Associates prepared a traffic impact study in support of this project. The study addressed:
| • |
Future auto- and pedestrian-trip generation |
| • |
Access/egress via the public street system |
| • |
On-site vehicle and pedestrian circulation |
| • |
Student pick-up/drop-off areas |
| • |
Intersection sight distance |
| • |
Vehicle queues |
| • |
Traffic control devices |
| • |
Parking |
| • |
Pavement markings |
| • |
Signage |
Wells + Associates recommended additional turn lanes to improve movement during peak periods at the King Street/Chinquapin Drive intersection, police control at the King Street/Radford Street/School Bus Driveway intersection, re-evaluation of the existing parking restrictions along Chinquapin Drive, and additional pavement markings to help guide motorists through the Kenwood Avenue/King Street intersection.
