| Rockville, Maryland |
When Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (SGAH) opened its doors in 1979, it stood alone among the undeveloped rolling pastures and farm fields of western Montgomery County. Since then, the community has rapidly grown up around it. Today this 281-bed acute care hospital serves as a primary health care resource for more than 250,000 local residents.
The hospital employs nearly 2,000 people and has a medical staff of over 1,000 physicians. The hospital delivers over 4,500 babies and treats more than 80,000 emergency patients a year.
SGAH proposes to expand the main hospital building by 180,000 S.F. and increase the number of beds to 346 beds. Plans also include relocation of the main entrance to the facility.
Wells + Associates was retained by SGAH to conduct a traffic impact assessment focusing on the existing and planned transportation systems. Wells + Associates determined that all of the intersections serving the hospital would continue to operate at acceptable levels of service with manageable queues with the expansion of the building and relocation of the main entrance to Medical Center Way.
Wells + Associates’ recommendations included:
| • |
The new driveway should provide separate left and right turn lanes for exiting traffic |
| • |
Raised median to separate inbound and outbound traffic and signage |
| • |
Provisions for new bus and passenger amenities |
| • |
New wayfinding signs |
| • |
Reduce the existing roadway cross section at the emergency entrance to encourage use of the new main driveway by visitors and patients |
