| Pope John Paul II Cultural Center |
| Washington, D.C. |
The Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, located in northeast Washington, D.C. near Catholic University and the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, anticipated 300,000 to 500,000 annual visitors upon opening in 2001.
Wells + Associates prepared a parking study that evaluated the following:
| • |
Employee parking demand |
| • |
Visitor attendance patterns based on two alternative models: a traditional museum model and a religious model |
| • |
Curb and off-site parking availability |
Wells + Associates concluded that the limited supply of on-site parking would not adequately meet visitor parking demand. Wells + Associates, therefore, recommended the following supply-side and demand-side solutions:
| • |
Provide off-site employee parking, dedicating most on-site parking to visitors |
| • |
Direct visitors to use curb parking |
| • |
Provide off-site visitor parking with shuttle bus service |
| • |
Provide valet parking for visitors |
| • |
Encourage staff and visitors to use Metro |
| • |
Jointly market the shrine and center, encouraging visitors to use Metro, charter buses, or walk from the adjacent shrine |
