Hillwood Museum and Gardens
Washington, D.C.
Hillwood Museum and Gardens features the most comprehensive collection of 18th and 19th century Russian imperial art outside of Russia and one of the world’s most important collections of 18th century French decorative arts.

Hillwood wishes to raise its profile both locally and nationally, increasing annual attendance from 65,000 to 80,000 visitors.  This would require a new special exception to the current District of Columbia Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) order, to increase (or remove) the 250-person daily visitor cap.

Wells + Associates was retained to document Hillwood’s current traffic and parking impact and evaluate the traffic and parking impacts of increased attendance on the surrounding neighborhood.

Wells + Associates study demonstrated that Hillwood’s driveway, neighborhood streets, and intersections currently operate acceptably at all times.  Wells + Associates also concluded that these levels of service can be maintained in the future, if the attendance cap is increased (or removed) to permit 500 visitors or more on Saturdays.

Parking was also found to be adequate at current visitor levels.  Additional parking would be required to accommodate increased attendance.  Wells & Associates recommendations included:

Construct additional on-site parking spaces
Arrange charter bus service for large weekend groups, particularly in the spring
Stagger tour schedules to reduce the number of visitors on the grounds at any one time
Arrange off-site parking for employees and volunteers
Encourage employees and volunteers to walk, carpool, or take public transportation
