John F. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts |
| Washington, D.C. |
The Kennedy Center is the nations performing arts center and a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Each year since 1971, the Kennedy Center presents more than 2,800 performances of music, theater, and dance to audiences of approximately two (2) million.
Parking (provided in three (3) underground levels) is in short supply. Parking demands exceed the available supply of 1,450 spaces 85 days of the year (or 23 percent of the time). Those not parking at the Kennedy Center must park off-site at the Watergate or Columbia Plaza or use public transportation.
Another 575 spaces will be provided by extending the three (3) existing underground parking levels on the north and south building elevations. Site access and egress would be provided via Rock Creek Parkway, New Hampshire Avenue, and 25th Street. A new direct ramp would connect the Kennedy Center directly to the E Street Expressway and Theodore Roosevelt Bridge.
Garage access and egress would be provided at five (5) locations instead of the current two (2) locations. A lightly used ramp that connects the E Street Expressway and Rock Creek Parkway would be eliminated to make room for a new bus parking area.
Wells + Associates determined that this expanded parking supply would accommodate peak patron parking demands. Traffic volumes would increase by 30 to 50 percent during the critical Friday and Saturday inbound and outbound peak periods. These increased traffic volumes can be adequately accommodated by the proposed garage access/egress, on-site circulation, and public street systems.
Wells + Associates also prepared three (3) traffic signal plans, signal interconnect plans, construction-sequencing plans, and interim signing and striping plans. |
