The Department of Defense (DoD) selected Mark Center as the future site of their Washington Headquarters Services (WHS). DoD determined that Mark Center met their security, transit, and accessibility requirements better than competing sites.
Sixty-four-hundred (6,400) jobs will be relocated in 2011 from various Northern Virginia locations to a 1.4 million square foot building at Mark Center as part of the federally-mandated Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.
The proposed WHS facility’s transportation infrastructure includes a new transit/visitor center, enhanced bus transit services, a remote inspection facility (RIF), widening of Seminary Road and North Beauregard Street, traffic signal system improvements, and 3,9 00 structured parking spaces, which will be funded by the property owners, Duke Realty.
Wells + Associat es was retained by Duke Realty to prepare a Transportation Improvement and Management Program (TIMP), which evaluated: on- and off-site traffic impacts; street and traffic signal system improvements; secured, gate-controlled access, egress, and queuing requirements; Metro access; mass transit operations impacts; parking requirements; and construction traffic impacts.
Wells + Associates is preparing traffic signal, signing, pavement marking, and maintenance of traffic plans. The traffic signal modification plans include Seminary Road at Mark Center Drive and North Beauregard Street and on North Beauregard Street at Mark Center Drive. Plans also include a new signal at Mark Center Drive and the WHS entrance.
