 Columbia is a New Town founded in 1964 by James Rouse, The Howard Research and Development (HRD) Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Rouse Company. Columbia is located 17 miles north of the Capital Beltway and 14 miles southwest of Baltimore in Howard County, Maryland.Today, Columbia is home to 81,000 residents and 57,000 employees. It consists of nine villages that include a broad mix of residential dwelling types, a commercial Village Center, institutional/cultural uses, and open space. Wells + Associates has, since its founding, provided transportation planning and traffic engineering services to HRD on more than 20 major projects. Wells + Associates continues to advise HRD on new projects and Howard County plans and policies that affect Columbia. |
