| Vision Plan and Development Strategy - Washington, D.C. |
NoMA – the area north of Massachusetts Avenue – it’s the next big thing.
NoMA currently is an ill-defined area of spotty development, empty or underdeveloped lots, surface parking, and the edges of existing residential neighborhoods. Transformation has begun with construction of the new Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATFE) headquarters, renovation and re-use of historic structures, and construction of the new New York Avenue/Florida Avenue/Gallaudet University Metro Station.
NoMA is planned for another 10,000,000 S.F. of office space, up to 800,000 S.F. of retail space, and 10,000 residential dwelling units.
The District of Columbia Office of Planning retained a team of planners, architects, economists, and engineers to prepare a vision plan and strategy to guide the transformation of NoMA into a vibrant, mixed-use, transit-oriented neighborhood.
Wells + Associates prepared the transportation element of the Plan. This included an evaluation of the existing multi-modal transportation network, review of past studies and plans, review of programmed and planned improvements, identification of existing challenges and opportunities, projection of future traffic volumes, and recognition of the need for improvements.
Wells + Associates recommended new street and alley linkages, conversion of several one-way streets into two-way streets, new traffic signals, a transit strategy, and new transit circulator service. |
