Old Town Fairfax Village
City of Fairfax, Virginia
The City of Fairfax has successfully reclaimed Main and North Streets for local businesses and pedestrians.

Historically, Old Town Fairfax was served by a grid network of two-way streets.  In 1972, two east-west arterial streets, Main Street and North Street, were converted to a one-way couplet to accommodate large volumes of traffic passing through Old Town.  Old Town Fairfax had become “a place to go through” rather than “a place to come to”.

As part of the Old Town Village project, Trammel Crow retained Wells + Associates to evaluate the feasibility of converting the existing one-way couplet back to two-way operation.  Wells engineers simulated the proposed two-way street configuration using Synchro and SimTraffic micro-simulation software.

The two-way system would make Old Town more accessible, improve vehicular and pedestrian circulation within the area, provide more on-street parking, and support new retail shops and entertainment.  The SimTraffic model showed that the two-way street grid would operate more efficiently with less delay than the one-way couplet.

The two-way street network was approved by the Mayor and City Council and implemented in July 2006.  City leaders and staff agree that Wells + Associates SimTraffic model accurately forecasted two-way traffic operations.  Old Town Fairfax once again is “a place to come to”, not “a place to pass through.”
